The University Consortium of Seinäjoki (UCS) in a nutshell

  • The University Consortium is home to Tampere University, the University of Helsinki, the University of Vaasa and the University of the Arts Helsinki.
  • Implements university-level education with four universities.
  • Promotes research activities in the South Ostrobothnia region through the Epanet professorship network.
  • Collaborates with regional companies, the public sector, regional developers and other research and education organisations.

Information about the University Consortium of Seinäjoki

University consortia operate in localities that do not have their own university. There are a total of six university consortia in Finland. The activities of the UCS emphasise:

  • research and development activities relevant to the region,
  • degree education and continuous learning services linked to regional needs,
  • artistic activities and the promotion of social impact.

You can find the UCS’s facilities on the second floor of the Frami C building (Kampusranta 9 C, 2nd floor, 60320 Seinäjoki).

Campus

Arriving at the UCS

Arriving without a car: Frami, the campus area where the UCS is located, is about a 10-minute walk from the Seinäjoki railway station. The easiest way to get there is to walk directly along Kalevankatu and the Kampusraitti pedestrian bridge over the river. Arriving by car: Parking space can be found in the Frami parking garage (P-Frami) and less than 200 m from the Seinäjoki Arena parking area (P-Areena). The entire Frami area is a no-parking zone, where parking is only allowed in marked spaces. The area is under the parking control of the City of Seinäjoki. Studies offered at the UCS

The degree programmes of the UCS are degree programmes leading to a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. Studies are mainly organised as blended learning, allowing students to flexibly combine working life and studies. In addition, continuous learning services are available, such as Open University studies and continuing education with varying content.

Please note that the defibrillator can be found in the lobbies of Frami’s B-section and D-section.

Access keys and building opening hours

The front doors of the Frami C and D buildings are open on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. At other times, the premises in the buildings can be accessed with an electronic access key. The front doors of Frami F, E and A buildings are open on weekdays from 7:30 to 16:00.

Access to, for example, the UCS Student Hub or the UCS office is granted with a key tag. The alarm system of the buildings will be switched on at 22:00 (advance announcement earlier).

Access keys can be picked up in person from the property maintenance desk of the Frami C building (open from 12 noon to 1 pm). A separate access permit for the access token to the Frami F building is applied for from the Frami F info.

UCS Student Hub

The communal workspace for university students in the Seinäjoki campus area is located in the Frami C building, on the 2nd floor (block C 240 1.2.) The space is an opportunity to study, meet other students, do group work or focus on quiet work.

The space has a small kitchen where you can make coffee and a fridge to store snacks!

There are two student restaurants in the Seinäjoki campus area, where you can get a meal subsidy from Kela with a student card. Both restaurants are located on SeAMK’s premises.

Library services

The staff and students of the UCS are served by SeAMK Library on the 0th floor of the Campus Building (Kalevankatu 35).

During the autumn and spring semesters, the library is open Monday–Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Access rights to the library are also available in the evenings if desired.

In addition to SeAMK Library, the libraries on the main campuses serve the students of the UCS. Please primarily use the services provided by the Main Campus Library for information retrieval and for searching for and using electronic materials. More information on the universities’ websites:

Network connections

Eduroam – Secure roaming that includes universities, research centers, schools and public spaces, as well as other communities in Finland and abroad. The user IDs of the entities included in this group operate in eduroam networks worldwide. Community members can access the networks with their own organisation’s user IDs.

roam.fi – A secure national roaming service that includes domestic universities, universities of applied sciences and other entities.

The computers of the TUNI-STAFFTampere higher education community use this.

Wireless visitor network TUNI-GUEST

You can log in to the TUNI-GUEST visitor network when you are a visitor to the higher education community, if your own community has not joined the eduroam or roam.fi online services.

TUNI-GUEST

  1. Join the TUNI-GUEST network with your device.
  2. Choose your email address or phone number as the login method.
  3. Review the Terms of use content in the link in the activation form and fill in the checkbox where you agree to abide by them.
  4. Enter the information requested in the activation form (your email address and phone number).
  5. Select Proceed.
  6. You will receive an activation link via email or text message. Before activation, TUNI-GUEST provides temporary access to the internet so that it is possible to activate the email link. By opening the link, you will have access to the TUNI-GUEST visitor network for 12 hours.

Student Guidance and Advisory Services in Seinäjoki

The Study Services team supports you with questions related to your studies. We provide information, advice, and guidance on study-related matters. Each Degree Programme has its own coordinator who answers programme-specific questions and offers guidance and support.

Student Card

You can obtain either a digital (recommended) or plastic student card. The card provides both local and national discounts and serves as official proof of student status for services like Matkahuolto and VR. To activate the card, you must register as present and pay the student union membership fee.

Student Meals

As a higher education student, you are entitled to a meal subsidy at restaurants participating in Kela’s meal support programme. The subsidy is €2.55 per meal. The restaurant deducts the subsidy from the meal price, and you pay the reduced amount. The subsidy applies to one meal per day and is granted upon showing your student card.

Health and Wellbeing Support

Student Health Services – FSHS

Student health services are provided by the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS). You are eligible for FSHS services if you are registered as present for the semester and pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

Your primary service point is based on your study location. If necessary, you may also access services at other FSHS locations depending on urgency and nature of the issue. Digital and remote services are available to all students regardless of location.

Wellbeing and Coping

FSHS offers a wide range of wellbeing services, including mental health support. Universities also provide access to study psychologists, whose services are available both in person and remotely. The aim of study psychologist guidance is to support students’ overall wellbeing and academic progress.

Typical topics include:

  • Supporting study progress: motivation, coping, stress and time management
  • Developing study and learning skills
  • Challenges in thesis writing and academic writing
  • Returning to studies after a long break

Study psychologists are bound by confidentiality. Discussions are private. They do not conduct psychological assessments or diagnose mental health conditions. For such matters, contact FSHS or your local health centre.

University Chaplain

Students at the UCS are also supported locally by University Chaplain Aila Jaakkola (+358 445 806 651, aila.jaakkola@seamk.fi). The chaplain supports students’ overall wellbeing and offers a safe space to talk about concerns, dreams, fears, or anything else on your mind. The service is open to everyone, regardless of background or beliefs.

Electronic examination

An electronic exam refers to an assessment completed using a computer or mobile device, designed to verify a student’s knowledge. The teacher creates the exam in advance using a selected system and defines a specific time or time window during which the exam must be taken. Additionally, the teacher determines whether the exam is to be completed in a supervised environment or if it can be taken remotely.

TUNI EXAM Room – Frami C

TUNI EXAM is the electronic examination service of the Tampere University, used to conduct digital exams. The service is available at https://exam.tuni.fi. TUNI EXAM enables flexible exam scheduling, allowing students to take exams at a time of their choosing in a designated EXAM room.

Tampere University provides an EXAM room at the UCS. The room is located on the first floor of the Frami C building. Outside the room, there are lockers with keys for storing outerwear and personal belongings. Access to the room requires a mobile key tag, with ordering instructions provided below.

General EXAM Room – Kampustalo

Students from other higher education institutions can take electronic exams in the EXAM room located in SEAMK’s Kampustalo.

Visiting students (exam visitors) can access the EXAM room only during the library’s customer service hours (note: library opening hours and customer service hours may differ—please check the calendar for customer service times). Visitors must enter the exam room before customer service closes, although the exam may end after the service has closed.

MLL Seinäjoen paikallisyhdistys (website in Finnish): MLL Seinäjoki is a local division of NGO The Mannerheim League for Child Welfare. They maintain the family house Kivirikko, a meeting place for youth and families. Their activities are open to everyone and everyone is welcome. Information from SeAMK’s university chaplain Aila Jaakkola: On Tuesday evenings we have “student evenings” at Kismus, Kalevankatu 12, Seinäjoki. There, I’ve arranged the Students’ evenings on Tuesdays at 17.00-19.00 for several years. It is a place to meet Finnish and International students, to chat and just hang around with a cup of tea or coffee. Once a month we’ll cook or bake something to eat.

I will also invite students for a leisure walk with or without a dog. I will have my dog with me. We will departure from the yard of Kampustalo at the end of the school day and go for an hour-long walk. We usually go for a walk on Wednesdays at 3.30 pm.

UCS Researcher Hotel

The Researcher Hotel offers free working spaces for researchers, especially doctoral students whose research has a connection to South Ostrobothnia, regardless of the higher education institution or background organisation. Postdoctoral researchers and master’s thesis writers are also considered. Thesis writers and postdoctoral researchers are required to participate in the activities of the research community, present their work in joint researcher meetings and to the general public.
